Part 1 Toward a Culturally-Oriented Nation
Chapter 4 Cultural Policies of Other Countries
Section 1: Cultural Policies of the United Kingdom
4. Japan-U.K. Cultural Exchange and "Japan 2001"

Japan and the U.K. are deepening cultural exchanges in various areas. "Festival UK 98" was held in Japan in 1998, which served to further develop mutual understanding between the two countries. In addition, "Japan 2001," a large-scale event to introduce Japanese culture sponsored by both the government and the private sector, will be held throughout the U.K. from May 2001 until the beginning of 2002. The two objectives of "Japan 2001" are "Viewing Culture" and "Participatory Events", and various events, including large-scale exhibitions such as "Exhibition of Shinto Art" (tentative name), and theatrical activities such as Kabuki performances, are currently being planned.

Note: The following exchange rates between the U.K. pound and the Japanese yen were used: 1 pound = 214 yen (1997) = 191 yen (1998) = 165 yen (1999) = 166 yen (2000)
