University Reform in Other Countries
5. Russia
(1) Diversification of completion Years, Qualifications, and Degrees

Traditionally all undergraduate programs lasted five to six years, but in 1992 a new system was introduced with the aims of responding to the diverse needs of society and students and of attracting more students. Under this system type 1 programs (two to three and a half years) and type 2 programs (at least four years) were established, and programs based on the old system were classified as type 3 (five to six years). It became possible to grant different types of qualifications and degrees under each program. The programs were brought into line with degree systems in other countries, and students who completed type 2 programs became eligible for bachelor's degrees.
