PART II Recent Trends and Developments in Government Policies in Education, Science and Culture
Chapter 11. The Shift to an Information-Oriented Society: Implications for Education, Science, Culture, and Sports
Section 4. Promoting the Supply of Lifelong Learning Information and Scientific Research Information and Developing Information Networks
3. Developing Science Information Databases

In many fields of activity it is becoming increasingly difficult for individuals, schools, and companies to collect and accumulate information independently because of the exponential growth in the volume of information and the diversification of the ways in which information is used. There is thus a need for the development of databases providing efficient access to a wide variety of information.

It has been pointed out that Japan has fallen behind Western countries in the development of databases of science information. In addition to promoting the compilation of databases in universities, the National Center for Science Information System, and other facilities, the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture is providing grants-in-aid for scientific research to assist the compilation of databases by researchers, academic societies, and others.
