4. Cooperation with the United Nations University

The United Nations University is a U.N. agency established on the basis of a General Assembly resolution in 1972. Its purpose is to carry out research and training and disseminate knowledge on global problems of human survival, development, and welfare. The university implements a variety of projects in such fields as the environment, economy, and science through a network with universities and research institutes around the world and through its own Research and Training Centers (RTCs). Japan cooperated actively in the establishment of the university, providing a site in Tokyo for its headquarters and contributing to its endowment. Japan continues to contribute funds to help defray the university's current expenditures and the cost of promoting scientific cooperation with Japanese universities and other institutions. In addition, Japan is contributing to a trust fund established to finance joint-research programs with UNESCO.
