Chapter 2. The Aims of the Five-Day School Week
Section 4. Achievement of a Smooth Transition to the Five-Day School Week and the Outlook for the Future
3. The Outlook for the Future

For the time being, the efforts of those involved in the switch to the five-day school week will focus on preparations for the transition to a semimonthly five-day school week and its smooth implementation. We must strive to overcome one by one the problems that have been identified so far, with the cooperation and understanding of those involved in school education, families, communities, and other sectors of society, so that we can realize the educational goals embodied in the five-day school week system.

It will be difficult to expand the five-day school week beyond the semimonthly system under the existing Courses of Study. Any future expansion of the five-day school week will require evaluating wide-ranging debate from a broader perspective while conducting basic studies on the future of Japanese school education, as well as conducting comprehensive analyses of acceptance of the semimonthly five-day school week and trends in public opinion.
