Chapter 2. The Aims of the Five-Day School Week
Section 2. Implementation of the Monthly Five-Day School Week
3. Children' Activities on Free Saturdays

A survey was carried out on the second Saturday of June 1994 (June 11), 21 months after the introduction of the monthly five-day school week, to ascertain how children were spending their time on Saturdays when schools were closed. The results showed that the most common activity for Saturday morning was "resting," followed by "play, sports, and strolling in the neighborhood." Initially it was feared that the time would be spent on juku attendance, but there was virtually no indication of this. It appears that children are generally using their free Saturdays as a time for relaxation and an opportunity to gain various experiences ( Figure I.2.3).
