Chapter 4 Promotion of Scientific Research
8 Promotion of International Scientific Exchange

The active exchange and cooperation of researchers across national boundaries are essential for the development of scientific research. In recent years international scientific exchange has become more and more important, along with an increase in global research issues, such as the global environmental issue, which require the international collaboration of researchers on a global basis.

The Ministry has been promoting international scientific exchange and cooperation through diverse forms, including international joint research, exchanges of researchers, international meetings of researchers and exchange of scientific information. The Ministry has been promoting international exchange activities in scientific fields, paying special attention to: increasing exchange activities in which Japanese researchers' play an active initiative role; exchanging young researchers; expanding scientific exchange and cooperation with developing countries; and sending abroad more and more Japanese scientific information.

It can be added that the Japanese government has been cooperating with the United Nations University, the only United Nations organ whose headquarters is located in Japan. The government has provided the university with physical facilities for its headquarters.
