CHAPTER 3. AIMS AND CONTENTS OF EDUCATION AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Educational goals and contents, the qualitative character of education, are no less closely related to social and economic development than is the quantitative diffusion of education. Indeed, much has been said about the task and function of education, but, when the educational development of a country is viewed from its historical perspective, education is conducted by the State or community for youth with the objective of developing in men and women the qualities desired by the State and community. To achieve this end, the required contents of education are formulated, the curricula organized, the educational system is formalized, the training of teachers and their reserves is conducted and teaching materials such as textbook and so forth are prepared. This chapter, with due consideration of social and economic development, deals with the development of educational goals and contents. The first section is intended to describe the characteristics of educational goals and the educational system of this country, in comparison with those of foreign countries. The second section deals with the historical development of educational goals and contents in this country and provides some analysis of their present status in comparison with other countries.
