Information carriers and innovative devices

1. Overview

In the advanced information society, devices and systems that connect cyber space and physical space must have multiple excellent characteristics such as energy saving and high functionality. On the other hand, it is becoming difficult to meet all the requirements with conventional semiconductor devices using electrons as information carriers*.
This strategic objective aims to utilize, in addition to the states and movements of electrons that have been mainly utilized for devices so far, quantum, spin, ion concentration, molecular structure, material phase change, and physical network structure as an information carrier to perform functions such as acquisition, conversion, storage, computation, transmission, and output of information. This objective further aims to establish theories, control technologies of the information carriers and device operation principles, as well as to create devices with innovative functions and performance.

*In this strategic objective, “information carrier” includes both physical entities such as electrons and ions, and physical quantities (state variables) representing information such as network structures of physical systems and molecular structures.

2. Targets

This strategic objective aims at developing new functional devices and significantly improving the performance of the system, by the optimal arrangement of information carriers that perform functions such as acquisition, conversion, storage, computation, transmission, and output of information within the device. In particular, the following three targets are to be achieved.
(1) Creation of various information carriers and development of theories on their characteristics and functions
(2) Establishment of control methods for information carriers and creation of operation principles of innovative devices
(3) Demonstration of innovative devices
