In preparing Japan's important national language policies, the government asks for and listens to the opinions of the National Language Council. In order for the Council to hold discussions, it requires a base of data collected through objective means and information derived from scholarly research and study.
To that end, the National Language Research Institute performs scientific research related to the Japanese language and its role in the lives of the Japanese people, and conducts activities to build a secure basis for rationalizing the Japanese language. In the future, it will be called upon to further promote such activities as international exchanges through the globalization of Japanese language studies, joint research both in Japan and abroad, and large-scale projects.
In addition, because the Institute is one of the facilities slated for relocation under the Law for the Promotion of a Multipolar National Land Structure, it is currently undergoing preparations to move from Kita ward to Tachikawa city in Tokyo.
