As a result of recent advances in technology, it is expected that arts employing new media, such as computer graphics, game software, Internet websites, etc., will develop. In addition, cinemas, animation and cartoons provide a platform for these new media.
In order to further promote media arts, the Agency for Cultural Affairs has established a series of measures called "Media Arts 21."
In order to promote new media arts, the Agency for Cultural Affairs holds the "ACA Media Arts Festival." In addition, since FY1998, the Agency for Cultural Affairs has sponsored the Media Arts Plaza, which uses the Internet to provide various information about creative activities.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs continues to recognize superior cinematic works, by providing support for scriptwriting contests to honor outstanding film scripts and for the showings of films by independent filmmakers.
In addition, The National Film Center of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Arts, which serves as the center of promotion of Japanese cinematic arts, provides assistance towards the participation of modern Japanese films in international film festivals, restores and repairs valuable cinematic works, trains specialists in filmmaking, and starting in FY2000, collects valuable Japanese films located in the Russian Federation.
