Chapter 3. For the Protection and Utilization of Cultural Properties
4 The Role of Science and Technology in Protecting Cultural Properties
2 Transmission of Techniques for the Conservation of Cultural Properties
Because most of Japan's tangible cultural properties are made of fragile materials such as wood, paper and lacquer, and are fragile in construction as well, repeated repairs are necessary for their preservation. The same is true of the production and repair of clothing implements and other materials directly related to the maintenance and support of intangible cultural properties, and the production or repair of the tools used in this type of work. For this reason, traditional production and repair techniques are important to the preservation of both tangible and intangible cultural properties, and need to be studied, kept and passed down if cultural properties are to be adequately preserved.
