(1) Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties

The Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties conducts scientific surveys and research having to do with preservation, repair and restoration techniques in the areas of fine arts, performing arts and other cultural properties. It also collects, maintains and publishes informative materials about its surveys and research. In 1993, this institute established a new Division of International Cooperation for Conservation. This division is engaged in basic research and in the collection and compilation of materials concerning the preservation of cultural properties overseas, as well as being involved in international joint research.

In addition to organizing in- service training courses for curatorial personnel who oversee the conservation of properties in museums and art museums, this institute also carries out international exchange through international training programs on the repair and restoration of cultural properties, and programs on the repair and restoration of Japanese art work located overseas (cf. Chapter 4, Section 3). Through these kinds of programs, the institute is endeavoring to enrich and strengthen its role in the area of research for the conservation and restoration of cultural properties.
