Chapter 2. Towards the Enrichment and Spread of Culture
4 Private Support for Artistic and Cultural Activities
2. Future Tasks

Concern has been expressed regarding the withdrawal of private support for artistic and cultural activities as the result of recent unfavorable economic conditions. In spite of this, as can be seen in Chart I-2-7, there has been an increase in the number of enterprises that create related posts to deal with the matter of support for artistic and cultural activities in a systematic manner. From this fact, one can draw the conclusion that support for art and culture has gradually taken root in the business world.

Chart l-2-7 Leader of Private Support for Artistic and Cultural Activities (Comparison in 3 years)

The public is expressing a high degree of interest in private support for artistic and cultural activities. About 70% of those responding to surveys conducted by the Agency for Cultural Affairs stated that they felt a need for support or contributions by private enterprises and individuals for art and culture. Almost 50 % of those with an interest in art and culture and80 % of artistic and cultural organizations stated that "enterprises and individuals should provide a greater amount of support and contribution" (Chart l-2-8).

The long term support for artistic and cultural activities that is carried out by enterprises according to their own respective philosophies will continue to be important in the future. It is also necessary that the government improve the system for promoting private support for artistic and cultural activities as well as create conditions conducive to making contributions in this area by, for example. making use of tax incentives and by nurturing capable personnel in the field of "art management" who will then support creative artistic activities in enterprises and art organizations.
