7. Establishment of a New National Theatre


The National Theatre was founded in 1966 for the purpose of preserving and promoting Japan's traditional performing arts. It has been along cherished desire on the part of those concerned with art and culture to establish an institute for the promotion of modern performing arts.

Plans are underway for the construction of the New National Theatre (tentative name) under the sponsorship of the Japan Arts Council, a special corporation. It will consist of a main theatre with a four sided stage for performances of opera and ballet. a medium sized theatre with a four sided stage to be used mainly for dramatic performances and modern dance and a small theatre with a new type of experimental open-style stage for modern performing arts. Expectations are high that upon completion, this theatre will attain both national and international prominence as a nucleus for the promotion of performing arts in Japan as well as being an important center for international cultural exchange.

The New National Theatre is scheduled for completion in February1997 on the site of the former Tokyo Industrial Laboratory in the Honcho area of Tokyo's Shibuya Ward. The Japan Arts Council and the land owners of property adjoining the theatre site are collaborating to prepare the entire area to assure that the building site itself and the surrounding streets convey a suitable cultural atmosphere. In the area of theatre management and operation, based on the recommendations of the New National Theatre Construction Preparation Conference, a group of promoters met in June 1992 to establish a foundation whose intent would be to execute a flexible system of management that would give full play to the inventive ideas put forth by artists. These meetings culminated in the creation of the New National Theatre Management Foundation in April 1993.

This foundation under commission of its establishing body, the Japan Arts Council will manage and operate the theatre. and will present public performances of modern performing arts at its facilities. At present, the foundation is engaged in plans and preparations for its formal opening in1997 and an inaugural performance scheduled to take place in 1997. The foundation is 21180 busying itself with scheduling future performances to be given at the theatre in the coming years. recruiting theatre management staff and other practical preliminary arrangements.

In connection with its preparations for the opening of this theatre,the foundation is researching, the development of a performing arts information system which will provide performing arts specialists, artistic and cultural organizations with information regarding the current state of artists. Art organizations, theatres and so on.
