CHAPTER 1. Towards the Enrichment of Culture
1 Increased Expectations for the Promotion of Culture, and Cultural Policy
5. What Types of Interest Do People Display in Culture?
(2) Interest in culture

As stated above, according to the "Culture Consciousness Survey", more than half of the adults surveyed responded that they are either "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in culture. If this can be attributed to a maturing society which is partially characterized by an increased amount of leisure time, the level of interest in culture can be expected to rise even higher.

The response of school students to the same question was somewhat different. The total number of students who responded that they were "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in culture was less than half, indicating that their interest in culture is not as great as that of adults (Chart I-1-2).

Considering the fact that culture is an important base upon which human life is built, it is necessary to raise the level of students' interest in culture. This task takes on even greater importance in light of the five-day school week that is gradually being introduced into the Japanese schools.
