CHAPTER 1. EXPANSION OF EDUCATIONALOPPORTUNITIES
7 Opportunities for Education and Training Other Than School Education

In addition to the educational activities provided in the regular schools mentioned in the preceding sections, various educational and training activities of varying content and methods are being conducted in homes, in businesses and else-where. The demand for life-long integrated education has been increasing in light of the increasing necessity to continue acquiring new knowledge and skills to cope with our rapidly changing society, the awareness that there are cases in which it is more effective to offer education outside schools rather than in schools and the realization that learning throughout life enriches the mind, and gives life additional meaning. Therefore, in recent years special emphasis has been placed on providing education and training in institutions other than schools.

In order to meet this demand for life-long integrated education, it is necessary to clarify the respective roles to be played by schools, homes and society, and to establish cooperative, organic relationships among them. In the sections, which follow, the existing formal educational and training opportunities other than school education will be outlined.
