CHAPTER 3. AIMS AND CONTENTS OF EDUCATION AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
1. Educational Patterns and Their New Trend
(1) Educational Goals
d. Importance of General Education

In many countries, efforts are made not only for the promotion of science and technical education but also for the strengthning of general basic education on which the former should be based on. It is aimed to train persons who are able to meet the requirement of the society which is changing and developing rapidly. Educational goals are, as indicated, roughly classified into four general patterns, but the current trend is common to educational reform in all countries, many of which are now directing intensive efforts toward achievement of the new objectives common to all. These common objectives include the extension of the years of compulsory education, the reorganization and expansion of secondary education, the training of scientists and technicians and the strengthening of general basic education. These goals are neither fixed nor clearly defined. They vary with differences in developmental level and characteristics of nations. However, they will tend to become more and more similar toward the new common objectives mentioned above.
