PREFACE

The modern of Socio-economic development in Japan which was ushereed in by the general modernization of the country during the Meiji Era, begining in 1868, was greatly acceleatedby the rapid economic recovery and growth after the close of World War 2. One of the basic factors in acchieving such national development has been the expansion and redirection of education.

Today, when socio-economic development requires new and greater impetus, it shouid be of value to study the role play by education in the process of the modernization of our society, and to utilized the results of such study for the determination of future education policy. Such study shouid involve a historial review of Japanese education in relation to educational developments in other countries and should result in a long-range and over all educationnal plan fitted to the changing society of Japan.
