What Will Digital Technology Bring to Human Beings? (Mastering the Digital Revolution)

Recombination of human and digital technology

Overview

In a society with advanced technology, communication is no longer limited to living things. Everything in the future will be connected via IoT and undergo dramatic transformation. How far will the virtual world and reality blend together? Can embodiment exist in virtual reality? Is it possible to merge body, mind and technology?
We will delve into the theme of “how can we identify human?” in a society of digital technology, seeking clues in martial arts, tea ceremony, zen, and wabi-sabi, and also consider how to build a rich technological society without giving technology control over humanity.

Challenges to develop an ecosystem for healthy aging community without financial aid.

Overview

In a developed aging society as Japan, it is reasonable to positively nurture wellness and healthcare related industry rather than to negatively worry about financial burden of increasing social welfare cost. In this session, we will introduce a pilot "Healthy aging community" project getting started with thousands of people engaged to promote health literacy and prevention, where sustainable ecosystem is being pursued. Our agenda today is to seek opportunities for all stakeholders to participate in such developed ecosystem by public-private cooperation and to find out solutions to monetize investment by big data analysis and innovative ideas. Finally we also try to figure out our possibility to reduce disparity of health condition, which is closely linked to disparity of wealth.

How can cutting-edge technologies such as robot suits and regenerative medicine deliver better future?

Overview

Walk, run, jump, pause, sit, stand up, grab, throw…when basic movements become impossible, we realize the miraculous balance that these simple functions require. But we can still live an active life without these functions by combining or complementing bionic technology, such as medical robotic suits and prosthetic legs, with regenerative medicine. This “KAITEKI” society will soon be a reality. In which direction will technological development advance by 2025, the year set as a milestone? We will have academics give their insights on the latest technologies and challenges, while a panelist with disabilities will express his hopes for future innovation and his proposal for society. The topics will also include the government's policies on science and technology and social measures.

How can Circular Economy play a critical role for local community revitalization?

Overview

Circular Economy brings profitable growth to the businesses by enabling full utilization of their 'assets' including product, IP, talent, and infrastructure. That norm holds true for community revitalization as well. For that purpose, a community needs to develop i) ecosystem that enables mutual utilization of assets of businesses, academia and public entities within a community, ii) new talent management model to realize 'Liquid Workforce' (right person in right place, in right time), and iii) digital technology/IoT platform. The session will discuss challenges and potential solutions associated with the said pursuit.

How can regenerative medicine contribute to society?

Overview

Ten years have passed since publication of the first paper on generation of iPS cells, representing a breakthrough in Japan-led research on regenerative medicine. Japan is already advanced in clinical application and promoting the uptake of regenerative medicine, having undertaken, in April 2014, the first retinal implant operation in the world using tissue derived from iPS cells, and established a legal framework for regenerative medicine in November of the same year. As regenerative medicine becomes a reality, we consider how this medical breakthrough will actually contribute to society, in treatment of diseases, development of new pharmaceuticals etc.

Since its arrival in Japan about 1200 years ago, green tea has become an essential part of Japanese life, with people over the years changing how it is produced and consumed. Green tea is enjoyed with meals and as a refreshing break, served to guests to show hospitality. This Japanese beverage is loved by creative people around the world, not only for its sensory delights but also its health benefits. Today green tea is being explored from new perspectives, for example, reusing tea leaves for fertilizers and other eco-products or introducing ICT-managed production control. Through green tea we hope to offer the world a glimpse of Japanese culture, encouraging people to converse and connect their thoughts.

A solution for our sustainable dining with not losing food value and joyfulness.

Overview

The world's population is expected to hit 9 billion by 2050, a time when issues related to food security will be among the greatest challenges facing human society. A variety of solutions have been discussed for securing stable food supplies. However, to eat is essential not only for maintaining human life, but also for promoting better health, for enjoying the pleasure of sharing food with others, and for experiencing diverse food cultures, such as local dishes and traditional foods.
In other words, a food crisis also means a crisis of culture and a crisis of human existence. Without losing the value and enjoyment of eating, we must think about solutions to ensure sustainable food tables for a population of 9 billion in 2050. We will look at food in the future from the viewpoint of food culture, nutritional balance, and the quality of life itself.
