環太平洋の環境文明史

既存の学問分野の枠に収まらない新興・融合領域である環太平洋の環境文明史の創成を目指す。つまり世界に類例のない、全く新しい歴史的知の枠組みを構築していく。研究の目的は、〈1〉環太平洋の非西洋型諸文明（メソアメリカ、アンデス、太平洋の島嶼、東南アジアなど）の盛衰に関する通時的比較研究、〈2〉環境史の精緻な記録である湖沼年縞堆積物（1年に１つ形成される「土の年輪」）を用いた環太平洋の環境システムの変遷史と諸文明史の因果関係の解明、〈3〉その歴史的教訓と今日的意義の探求である。本領域が革新的・創造的な研究を推進することで、従来の西洋中心的な人類史を再構成する上で大きく貢献すると共に、当該領域の学術水準を国際的に向上・強化し、革新的な人材育成に繋がると期待される。この貢献は現代地球社会の諸問題解決の糸口を見出し、持続可能な発展を遂げていくための科学的知見に資するものである。
Pan Pacific Environmental Changes and Civilizations

This project intends to construct a new historical paradigm “Pan Pacific Environmental Changes and Civilizations.” The objective of this project is to make a diachronic comparison of the rise and fall of non-Western Pan Pacific civilizations, including Mesoamerica, the Andes, the Pacific islands, and Southeast Asia. The environmental annual history and the rise and fall of Pan Pacific civilizations will be investigated by means of the study of annually laminated sediments, in order to bring to light their historical lessons and their implications for the modern world. The results of this innovative project will have important contributions to reconstruct not only non-Western centric but also the more global history of mankind and lead to a better understanding and amelioration of contemporary problems.
