研究の概要

　サンゴ礁は、様々な階層で生物と地形、人が相互作用し合う共生･共存系である。現在、このサンゴ礁は、ローカルな環境ストレスと地球温暖化が複合したストレスによって、劣化･破壊の危機にある。しかし現状では、サンゴ礁の階層的な共生系の維持機構とそのストレス応答が不明なため、科学的根拠に基づく再生策をとることができない。
　サンゴ礁学は、サンゴ礁共生系の複合ストレスに対する応答モデルを構築するとともに、応答モデルに基づいてサンゴ礁の監視･診断を行う手法を開発して、適切なストレス制御と修復･再生のために必要なガイドラインを示し、人とサンゴ礁、人と生態系との新たな共生･共存系構築のための学術的基礎を創ることを目的とする。

Abstract of Research Project

Coral reefs are symbiotic and coexistence system among ecosystem, landform and human being at various levels. They are now under threats of degradation and destruction by local human stresses and global warming.
Coral reef science aims to construct a model of reef response to the multiple stresses, and to develop monitoring and diagnosis procedures based on the model to propose a guideline for threshold level of the stresses, restoration and regeneration of the ecosystem. It will provide a scientific basis to reconstruct a symbiotic and coexistence system between human being and coral reefs, and ecosystems in general for the future generations.
