The Future of Universities:
Roles, driving forces of change, scenarios and policy challenges
11-12 December 2003, Tokyo
The OECD/Japan Seminar is a programme organised by the Japanese Ministry
of Education, Culture, Sports Science and Technology (MEXT) and the
OECD. The purpose of the seminar is to provide participants from OECD
with opportunity to exchange information and views on the theme chosen
each year.
This year, the seminar theme gThe Future of Universities: Roles, driving
forces of change, scenarios and policy challengesh.
The purpose of this meeting is to provide an opportunity for policy
makers and stakeholders in higher education to discuss the long turn
future of universities. The OECD/CERI project on the future of universities
will analyze possible ways society might meet the need for research,
teaching and learning, and services and what kind of roles universities
will perform. Looking ten to twenty years ahead, this will be done by
elaborating on a small number of scenarios for the future of universities.
Exploring different scenarios on the possible future of universities
will help policymakers and stakeholders follow the most desirable paths.
The OECD Secretariat will introduce a preliminary set of scenarios at
the seminar for discussion.
