In order to further enhance the nation’s English education, the English Language Education Council, Inc. (ELEC), with the cooperation of MEXT, has launched the English education portal site EIGO-NET. The site aims to collect instructive information on English education, which can be accessed by all English educators nationwide.
With the rapid advance of globalization, there is an ever-increasing demand for our future leaders to have a good command of English.
The Report “Five Proposals and Specific Measures for Developing Proficiency in English for International Communication.” drawn up by the Commission on the Development of Foreign Language Proficiency in June 2011, defines the foreign language abilities needed in today's globalized society as the ability to actively communicate with people of different countries and cultures, to make logical and reasoned explanation of one' s own views, and to convince and persuade others.
With the aim of assisting English educators aspiring for further enhancement of English education, the newly launched EIGO-NET provides information concerning measures to give more opportunities for students to use English, to stimulate students' motivation for English learning, to effectively utilize ALTs and ICTs, and to reinforce the English skills and instructional abilities of English teachers, among others.
EIGO-net is operated by ELEC, a not-for-profit foundation, in close cooperation with International Education Division, Elementary and Secondary Education Bureau, MEXT,
