The World Premier International Research Center Initiative （WPI） Interim Evaluation and Follow‐up

Notice on the results of the Interim Evaluation for five WPI centers selected in FY2007 and the Follow-up for one center selected in FY2010.

1.WPI Summary

The WPI provides priority support for proposals aimed at creating world premier international research centers primarily staffed with the world’s most leading researchers. By achieving a very high research standard and providing an excellent research environment, the centers should be “globally visible research centers,” and able to attract top-level researchers from around the world.

The WPI Program Committee conducted an interim evaluation for the five WPI centers selected in FY2007 and a follow-up for the one center selected in FY2010.

Advanced Institute for Materials Research （AIMR）, Tohoku University
Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe （IPMU）, University of Tokyo
Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences （iCeMS）, Kyoto University
Immunology Frontier Research Center （IFReC）, Osaka University
International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics （MANA）, National Institute for Materials Science （NIMS）

International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research （I2CNER）, Kyushu University

2.Summary of Interim Evaluation and FY2010 Follow-up Results

The WPI Program Committee meeting chaired by Hiroo Imura was held on October 19 and conducted an Interim Evaluation and FY2010 Follow-up. Hearings from the center directors and the heads of the host organizations were conducted based on the self-evaluation reports submitted by the centers and the reports of site visits conducted prior to the meeting.

（1） Interim Evaluation Results
The Interim Evaluation results for the five centers selected in FY2007 are as follows. Please refer to attached document for the comments and recommendations made by the Program Committee.

※Overall Rankings and Criteria

S	Progress being made in establishing the center exceeds its initial goals. Even greater progress in developing itself as a “top world-level research center” is anticipated.
A	It should be possible for the center to achieve its initial goals by continuing its current efforts.
B	More effort will be needed to achieve the center’s goals, including consideration given to the Committee’s advice.
C	Under the current state, it is deemed difficult for the center to achieve its initial goals. It will, therefore, need to effectively amend its plan, taking into consideration the Committee’s advice.
D	Given the state of progress to date, it is deemed difficult for the center to achieve its initial goals even if further effort is made to do so. Therefore, the center project should be terminated.

（2） FY2010 Follow-up Results
While the global visibility of I2CNER has steadily increased due to the director’s effort to cultivate a framework with many research institutions in the US and Europe within a short period of time, the physical presence of the director and effort rates of the Principal Investigators need to be increased.
