Supporting Bilateral Collaborations with Partner Countries

・ Bilateral Programs

Joint Research Projects and Seminars
JSPS provides financial support to Japanese researchers to carry out bilateral joint projects and seminars to build enduring networks under the following two program formats.
― Joint Research Projects and Seminars in cooperation with overseas counterpart agencies that have bilateral agreements with JSPS
― Open Partnership Joint Projects and Seminars with all countries

Researcher Exchanges
Based on bilateral agreements with overseas counterpart agencies, JSPS provides financial support to the Japanese researchers visiting other countries to carry out research or hold discussions.

Advancing International Joint Research

・JSPS―NSF International Collaborations in Chemistry （ICC）
This ICC Program is carried out in cooperation with the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the US. Through international joint research projects between Japan and the US, the program seeks to break new ground in yet-uncultivated domains of chemistry by achieving new levels and dimensions of research synergy.

・JSPS-NSF Cooperative Program for Interdisciplinary Joint Research Projects in Hazards and Disasters（Japanese site only. English site will be opened soon）
JSPS carries out this cross-disciplinary program between Japan and the US in cooperation with NSF. It works to advance an understanding on a range of hazard/disaster-related aspects including the fundamental processes that generate natural and technological disasters as well as the causes, interdependences, impacts, and cumulative societal effects of such disasters. The program also seeks to improve disaster prediction, damage mitigation, and response and recovery capabilities.

・JSPS-NSF Partnerships for International Research and Education （PIRE）
This PIRE Program is carried out in cooperation with the National Science Foundation （NSF） in the US. The program implements joint research projects on issues difficult to solve by one country alone. In carrying out the joint projects, a synergistic effect is sought by such means as sharing resources and research facilities.

・G8 Research Councils Initiative
Under the G8 Research Councils Initiative, multilateral joint research is carried out with support by seven of the G8 countries. The program funds a wide spectrum of international joint projects in which excellent researchers, jointly recruited from universities and institutes in the participating countries, collaborate within a highly synergistic framework.

A. Advanced Research Networks
To create top world-class research centers in leading-edge fields, JSPS supports a wide spectrum of activities, including joint research projects and seminars, carried out based on sustainable partnership with research institutions around the world, while providing cutting-edge platforms for fostering young researchers.

B. Asia-Africa Science Platforms
To help solve problems prevailing in developing regions of Asia and Africa, Japanese universities and research institutions take the lead in building research centers in those counterpart countries and in fostering indigenous researchers.

・A3 Foresight Program
Along with JSPS, partner funding agencies in China and Korea jointly recruit, select and support trilateral projects to develop top world-class research hubs in East Asia.

Providing International Experience and Training to Young Researchers

・Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research Abroad
To foster highly capable researchers with wide international perspectives, this fellowship gives excellent young Japanese researchers an opportunity to carry out long-term research at an overseas university or research institution.

・Japanese-German Graduate Externship
Mutual graduate curricula are established by collaborating Japanese and German universities, and doctoral students, young researchers including postdocs, and teaching professionals are exchanged between them. In both countries, the doctoral students receive guidance with their research and in preparing their dissertations.

・Frontiers of Science （FoS） Symposium
These bilateral symposia are held between Japan and the US, Germany and France. Each assembles 30-40 young researchers from the respective countries, who lodge together for three days. The participants are offered an unusual opportunity to engage in cross-disciplinary discussions on cutting-edge scientific topics.

・Travel Grant for Attending Lindau Meetings
At Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, Nobel laureates give lectures to and hold discussions with young researchers from around the world. JSPS nominates Japanese candidates to the Lindau Council.

Mobilizing the World’s Best Brains while Fostering Internationally Vigorous, Young Researchers

・HOPE Meetings with Nobel Laureates
These meetings give opportunities for excellent doctoral students and young researchers selected from countries/areas in the Asia -Pacific and African region to engage in interdisciplinary discussions with Nobel Laureates and other distinguished scientists.

Japan Science and Technology Agency （JST） 

Support for International Research Exchanges and Joint Research

・Strategic International Research Cooperative Program （SICP） /Strategic International Collaborative Research Program （SICORP）
JST supports international research exchanges and joint research with specific countries in the specific fields of cooperation designated by MEXT on the basis of intergovernmental agreements. JST supports researchers in Japan and the counterpart agency/ministry supports researchers in the counterpart country.

・Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development （SATREPS）
SATREPS is a JST and JICA program for research projects targeting global issues with an objective of future utilization of research outcomes, and involving partnerships between researchers in Japan and developing countries in coordination with ODA.

International Collaboration

International collaboration is a key element of RIKEN’s research strategy, for today, science is a truly global endeavor. National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention（NIED）

NIED aims to protect people's lives and properties from natural disasters and to prepare society to be resilient to natural disasters, through research on disasters caused by earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, landslides, meteorological changes, snow and ice damages.

International Contribution through R&D on Disaster Preventions

NIED has set "International contribution through R&D on disaster prevention" as one of its basic policies, and not only collaborates with overseas organizations but also cooperates with developing countries.

National Institute of Radiological Sciences （NIRS）

NIRS, as Japan's only institute dedicated to comprehensive research and development of radiation and health, conducts studies on heavy ion radiation therapy, molecular imaging, radiation protection and emergency medicine, etc. and provides education and training in these fields.
