 MEXT, through the Japan Science and Technology Agency, continues to assist youth participation in international science and technology competitions. MEXT has received notice that Japanese students who participated in the 10th International Earth Science Olympiad hosted by Tsu City, Mie Prefecture have won medals.

◆ General Information on the International Earth Science Olympiad

  • The first International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) was held in Daegu, South Korea in 2007.
  • The 2016 Japan IESO marks the 10th competition.
  • Japan started participating in the IESO from 2008, sending 4 participants annually thereafter. This is Japan’s 9th time participating.
  • At last year’s competition in Brazil, 85 participants from 22 countries and regions participated. Japan won a total of 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.
  • At this year’s event, 100 students from 26 countries and regions participated. Japan won a total of 3 gold and 1 silver medals.

◆ Japanese Results at the Past 3 International Earth Science Olympiads

  • 2013: 7th International Earth Science Olympiad, India:
     1 gold medal, 3 silver medals (90 students from 23 countries and regions participated)
  • 2014: 8th International Earth Science Olympiad, Spain:
     3 gold medals, 1 bronze medal (82 students from 21 countries and regions participated)
  • 2015: 9th International Earth Science Olympiad, Brazil:
     1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, 2 bronze medals (85 students from 22 countries and regions participated)
