 MEXT, through the Japan Science and Technology Agency, continues to assist youth participation in international science and technology competitions. MEXT has received notice that Japanese students who participated in the 48th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) hosted by Tbilisi, Georgia have won medals.

◆ General Information on the International Chemistry Olympiad

  • The first International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) was held in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Poland in 1968.
  • The 2016 Georgia IChO marks the 48th competition.
  • Japan started participating in the IChO from 2003, sending 4 participants annually thereafter. This is Japan’s 14th time participating.
  • At last year’s competition in Azerbaijan, 292 people from 75 countries and regions participated. Japan won a total of 2 gold and 2 silver medals.
  • At last year’s competition in Azerbaijan, it was officially decided that the 2021 International Chemistry Olympiad will be held in Japan.
  • At this year’s competition, 264 people from 67 countries and regions participated. Japan won a total of 1 gold and 3 silver medals.

◆ Japanese Results at the Past 3 International Chemistry Olympiads

  • 2013: 45th. International Chemistry Olympiad, Moscow, Russia:
     4 silver medals (291 students from 73 countries and regions participated)
  • 2014: 46th. International Chemistry Olympiad, Vietnam:
     1 gold medal, 2 silver medals, 1 bronze medal (291 students from 75 countries and regions participated)
  • 2015: 47th. International Chemistry Olympiad, Azerbaijan:
     2 gold medals, 2 silver medals (292 students from 75 countries and regions participated)
