MEXT, through the Japan Science and Technology Agency, continues to assist youth participation in international science and technology competitions. MEXT has received notice that Japanese students who participated in the 27th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) hosted by Hanoi, Vietnam have won medals.

◆ General Information on the International Biology Olympiad

  • The first International Biology Olympiad (IBO) was held in the former Czechoslovakia in 1990.
  • The 2016 Vietnam IBO marks the 27th competition.
  • Japan started participating in the IBO from 2005, sending 4 participants annually thereafter. This is Japan’s 12th time participating.
  • At last year’s IBO competition in Denmark, 239 people from 61 countries and regions participated. Japan won a total of 1 gold and 2 silver and 1 bronze medals.
  • At this year’s IBO competition in Vietnam, 263 people from 68 countries and regions participated. Japan won a total of 1 gold and 3 silver medals.

◆ Japanese Results at the Past 3 International Biology Olympiads

  • 2013: 24th International Biology Olympiad, Bern, Switzerland:
     1 gold medal, 3 silver medals (240 students from 62 countries and regions participated)
  • 2014: 25th International Biology Olympiad, Indonesia:
     1 gold medal, 3 silver medals (239 students from 61 countries and regions participated)
  • 2015: 26th International Biology Olympiad, Denmark:
     1 gold medal, 2 silver medals, 1 bronze medal (239 students from 61 countries and regions participated)
