The 21st ASEAN-Japan Summit was held on 14 November, 2018 in Singapore, and in its Chairman’s Statement, “Japan-ASEAN STI for SDGs Bridging Initiative” (refer to the document at the bottom of the page) promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan (including its relevant National Research and Development Agencies), related ministries of the ASEAN Member States, and the ASEAN Secretariat was mentioned as follows:


We reaffirmed our commitment to strengthening cooperation in the area of science and technology and implementation of collaborative research, and welcomed the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals (STI for SDGs) Bridging Initiative starting this year with the first multi-stakeholder forum to be held in Thailand in 2019.

     “Japan-ASEAN STI for SDGs Bridging Initiative” and its start were agreed at the 9th ASEAN-Japan Cooperation Committee on Science and Technology (AJCCST-9) held in October 2018.

      Under this initiative, Japan and ASEAN will further strengthen science and technology cooperation, and as a solid action to promote the social implementation of the outputs of collaborative research, the First Japan-ASEAN Multi-Stakeholder Strategic Consultancy Forum will be held in Thailand in 2019.
