The 9th Meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Cooperation Committee on Science and Technology (AJCCST-9) was held in Cebu, Philippines, on October 18th, 2018, in order to discuss cooperation between Japan and the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST). As a co-chair, Mr. Mitsuyuki Ueda, Director, International Science and Technology Affairs Division, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan, participated in this meeting with those involved on the Japanese side, such as Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), and Mission of Japan to ASEAN. On the ASEAN side, Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, co-chair of this meeting and Undersecretary for Research and Development, Department of Science and Technology of the Philippines, and the ASEAN-COST members from each ASEAN country participated.

 In this meeting, Japanese side explained their latest activities on S&T including the promotion of STI for SDGs (Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals), while ASEAN side introduced their latest S&T activities as well. JST, JSPS, JAXA, and NICT reported the present states of their programs, which was followed by the exchange of opinions based on both sides’ mutual interests.
 Notably, participants engaged in productive discussion about “Japan-ASEAN STI for SDGs Bridging Initiative” to enhance social implementation from Japan-ASEAN collaborative research outputs in light of the SDGs, on which opinion exchange has been done since earlier this year. As a result of the discussion, both sides agreed on the start of the Initiative and the continued discussion on the details about the first forum to be held in Thailand in 2019, which brings together multi-stakeholders concerned.

 Next meeting (AJCCST-10) is scheduled to be held in Indonesia in June, 2019.
