In keeping with the Middle Level School Order's aims, curriculum revisions were organized - especially for the middle schools and girls' high schools. Considerable emphasis was placed upon non-academic activities.
The new middle school curriculum consisted of six subjects: national studies (morals (shushin), Japanese language, history and geography); science & mathematics (mathematics, material phenomena and biology); physical training (military drill, athletics and martial arts); arts (music, calligraphy, drawing and handicrafts); vocational training (agriculture, industry, commerce or fisheries); and foreign languages (English, German, French, Chinese, Malay, etc.). Either vocational training or foreign languages were to be chosen from the third year (second year in night courses).
Girls' high schools offered two kinds of subjects: basic and supplementary. The basic subjects included national studies (morals, Japanese language, history and geography), science & mathematics (mathematics, material phenomena and biology), home economics (household management, child care, hygiene and dress making), physical training (athletics, martial arts and military drill) and arts (music, calligraphy, drawing and handicrafts). The supplementary subjects included home economics, vocational training (agriculture and/or commerce) and foreign languages (English, German, French, Chinese, Malay, etc.). Details of curriculum were prepared based on the instructions issued in March, 1943.
