(2)Increase in the Number of Middle Schools and Girls' High Schools

The number of middle level schools and enrolled students greatly increased during the war years. In 1937 there were 563 middle schools with 364,486 students enrolled. By 1943, these figures had risen to 727 and 607,114 respectively. For girls' high schools the numbers rose over the same period from 996 schools and 454,423 students to 1,299 and 756,955 respectively. Vocational schools also expanded; in 1943 there were 1,991 schools with a student enrollment of 794,217.
