In October 2000, the Nobel Prize was awarded to Dr Hideki Shirakawa, professor emeritus of the University of Tsukuba, together with Professor Allan J. Heeger and Professor Allan G. MacDiarmid, for their study of "The Discovery and Development of Conductive Polymers".

Dr. Shirakawa's study shows a true picture that an excellent achievement is the outcome of unfailing basic study subsequent to a rudimentary finding out of steady researches.

Additionally in the unexplored field of knowledge, researches of the world highest standard are under way in Japan, and achievements in not a few fields are attracting the world's attention.
