Chapter 2: Japan's Science and Technology Today
Section 1: Progress of the Science and Technology Basic Plan
1. Survey of Followup to the Science and Technology Basic Plan

The fiscal year 1998 being the interim year of the Science and Technology Basic Plan (fiscal 1996-2000), it was deemed necessary to determine the progress of the various scientific and technological measures implemented under the Plan, and to begin considering additional measures in accordance with said progress.

To follow up on the Science and Technology Basic Plan, the Policy Committee of the Council for Science and Technology in late October 1998 launched a survey to invite the opinions of a wide range of experts and examine the progress of measures being implemented under the current plan.

The Policy Committee in April 1999 used the results of this survey to prepare an interim summary of followup to the Basic Plan. This summary discusses the desirable direction of science and technology policy and the policy issues that must be examined more closely in keeping with the ultimate objective of making Japan a "nation founded on science and technology" in the next century.
