Section 7: Establishment of National Cultural Facilities
5. Enhancement of the National Research Institutes of Cultural Properties

The Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties and the Nara National Research Institute of Cultural Properties conduct research in such fields as archaeology, history of architecture, and the history of fine arts, as well as fields relating to cultural properties based on the results of scholarly and multi-disciplinary research incorporating scientific methods.

The Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties promotes cooperation in restoring classical Japanese works of art in overseas museum collections abroad in order to respond to the recent increase in international cooperative research activities related to the restoration of cultural properties. It has also established the Japan Center for International Cooperation in Conservation, which furthers international research exchange and cooperation pertaining to the conservation and restoration of world cultural properties. In March 2000, it completed a relocation to a new building with modern facilities.

The Nara National Research Institute of Cultural Properties performs research primarily focusing on the study, conservation, and use of buildings which are cultural properties. In FY1997, the restoration of the Suzakumon gate and the To-in Garden at the Nara Palace Site was completed, and the Institute is presently proceeding with plans for the first phase of the restoration of Daigokuden Seiden and a preparation study for the first phase of the restoration of the Daigokuden-in site.
