Section 2: Cultural Policies of the United States
4. Promotion of Cultural Exchange Programs Between Japan and the U.S.

Japan-U.S. cultural exchange is being carried out actively in a wide range of fields, including human exchange, study of Japanese language and Japan, arts exchange, intellectual exchange and grass roots exchange at all levels of the population from the highest national leaders to the general public. In addition, Japan-U.S. cultural exchange is characterized by the importance of the role of not only exchange involving the government but also the role of private sector exchange (including the America-Japan Society, Inc., cultural organizations, educational organizations and enterprises). The year 2001 marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Peace with Japan. A variety of cultural events, mainly involving the private sector, have been planned to commemorate the occasion.

Note: The following exchange rates between the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen were used: 1 dollar = 115 yen (1996) = 102 yen (1999) = 108 yen (2000)
