Section 2 Educational Reform Q&A
Q7
The Aim of the New Courses of Study

The basic aim of the new Courses of Study is to cultivate in children a "zest for living," including the ability to learn and think by themselves.

Children's academic ability will not improve if knowledge is merely taught in a one-sided manner. It will only have meaning if it is firmly instilled in them and enables them to actually live and work, as well as use the knowledge in their daily life and their future working and family lives.

For this purpose, in order to ensure that the carefully selected basic abilities and skills are firmly instilled, it is important to enhance individually targeted teaching and hands-on learning and the problem-solving approach to learning, including individual instruction, teaching by group and team teaching; and have children learn deliberately in a relaxed and comfortable environment so that they can understand with a sense of realness. These things will enable children to savor the joy of learning and a sense of accomplishment. Only when they develop intellectual curiosity and an inquiring mind and cultivate their own desire to learn, will they truly acquire academic ability.
