University Reform in Other Countries
4. Germany
(4) Restructuring of higher Education in the Former Territory of East Germany

After the unification of Germany in October 1990, universities and faculties in the former territory of East Germany, which had been deeply involved in ideological education and research, were either closed or restructured. A number of reforms are being implemented to bring higher education into line with the system of the former territory of West Germany, including the restructuring of university administration and management organizations and the establishment of Fachhochschulen, which did not exist in East Germany.
