2. Expanding Opportunities for Art Appreciation at the Local Level


The Agency for Cultural Affairs jointly sponsors performing arts tours with local governments. The programs, which are structured according to the age groups of the audience, provide people throughout Japan with opportunities to appreciate excellence in Japanese performing arts. The aim of this program is to expand opportunities for art appreciation and to stimulate local governments' cultural policies.


1. Traveling Arts Festival:

This traveling festival presents the best in performing arts to people throughout Japan. In fiscal 1994, 97 performances in 11 categories were planned.


2. Children's Arts Theater:

This traveling program targets children between the ages of 10 and 13. Its purpose is to enrich creativity and sensitivity, foster cultural appreciation, and raise the standard of children's artistic and cultural activities by presenting high-quality performing arts in venues throughout Japan. In fiscal 1994, 35 performances in 5 categories were scheduled.


3. Young People's Arts Theater:

Young people in the 14-19 age group, who will be the next generation of adults, are the target audience for this program of traveling performances. Its purpose is to encourage interest in arts and culture, foster cultural appreciation, and stimulate participation through presentation of high-quality performing arts throughout Japan. In fiscal 1994, 28 performances in 7 categories were scheduled.


4. Lower Secondary School Art Appreciation Program:

Under this program skilled performers perform in lower secondary school gymnasiums for students and their parents. The purposes of the program are to provide opportunities for art appreciation and expressive activities in the context of school educational activities and to foster the healthy development of lower secondary school students. In fiscal 1994, 38 performances in 6 categories were planned.


5. Touring Exhibitions to Local Areas:

The National Museums and National Museums of Art Touring Exhibitions to Local Areas were established in fiscal 1994 to enable local residents to appreciate outstanding works of art in their own communities and make effective use of artworks in government collections. Lectures and symposiums are held in conjunction with these touring exhibitions.
