PART II Recent Trends and Developments in Government Policies in Education, Science and Culture
Chapter 6. Promoting Scientific Research
Section 4. The Role of Research Institutions in Promoting Scientific Research
2. The Role and Activities of Academic Societies

Academic societies play a vital role as forums for the evaluation of research results, the exchange of information, and the development of personal contacts across the boundaries of individual research institutions within universities and other institutions. They make an important contribution to the advancement of scientific research through such activities as the publication of journals containing the latest and best research findings and the sponsoring of research symposiums.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture has traditionally used the grants-in-aid for scientific research system to subsidize the expenditures of these societies on such activities as the publication of journals and monographs, the translation of scholarly works into other languages, the compilation of databases, and the standardization of scientific terms. In fiscal 1994 the Ministry also began to subsidize expenditures on symposiums and other programs designed to inform the general public and young people about the latest research activities and stimulate public interest in research. The government is also helping to promote the activities of academic societies by granting the status of special public interest corporation to incorporated academic societies that meet certain criteria.
