Chapter 4 Culture Connects the World
5 Cultural Policy in Foreign Countries
4 Cultural Policy in Germany
(2) Promotion of art and culture

In the Federal Government, the Ministry of the Interior has jurisdiction over subsidies for councils such as those that are associated with the entire Federal Republic, including the German Music Council and the Arts Fund. The Ministry of the Interior also has jurisdiction over legislation that concerns art and culture. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs subsidizes programs that introduce German culture abroad. The Ministry of Education and Science subsidizes colleges of art and music, as well as community cultural activities. In 1951, a cultural section, which conducts artistic and cultural projects, was established in the German Industrial Union for the support of culture from the private sector. Support from the private sector does not seem to be readily forthcoming, however, as it is a general opinion that culture should be publicly supported.
