2 Assistance through the Japan Arts Fund


With the intention of strengthening the infrastructure of cultural and artistic activities in Japan, the Japan Arts Fund was established at the end of March 1990 with a government endowment of 50 billion yen which was included in the Ministry's supplemental budget for 1989 and private endowment expected to be raised up to 10 billion yen. With income generated from the interest, the Fund started to provide subsidies to a wide range of cultural activities, such as creative artistic activities, cinema, local culture, cultural properties, and so on. In 1990, subsidies totaling 2,130 million yen were provided to 447 programs and in 1991, 789 programs were provided with 3,050 million yen.
