Research facilities form an important basis of support for scientific research activities. The Ministry has made efforts to improve and expand national inter-university research institutes, research institutes affiliated with national universities, and other joint use research facilities available to all university researchers in Japan, for the purpose of encouraging cooperative research systems. The Ministry has similarly promoted the establishment of large computer centers and integrated information processing centers as well as the improvement of campus information networks. Further, the Ministry is helping to establish joint research centers aimed at promoting industry-university research cooperation and is building residences to accommodate foreign researchers and students staying in Japan.
As for the strengthening of research facilities for the future, reconstructing aging facilities and expanding the presently cramped research environments will be among the urgent issues requiring attention.
