University faculties form the basic organization of education and research. Usually, each faculty is composed of several undergraduate courses.
Graduate schools are assigned important roles to play in strengthening the foundation of scientific research through their promotion of basic research, and the fostering of researchers and professionals. Graduate schools mostly consist of several departments corresponding to undergraduate faculties and are managed in one united body with mother faculties. Recently, however, universities are establishing postgraduate divisions or courses which are independent of the undergraduate faculties. Also a new type of university, which consists of graduate schools only, has been established.
(Note) Besides universities. junior colleges. colleges of technology. research institutes attached to universitiesand other research facilities, and national inter-university re-search institutes are included.
