Providing young researchers with opportunities to freely and independently devote themselves to research is important for fostering their creativity. This is indispensable for innovative and pioneering research.
In order to facilitate this, government-supported fellowship programs, including fellowships for young Japanese researchers administered by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), deserve to be further improved and strengthened.
In order to cope with the recent tendency toward an increase in scope and advancement in the quality of scientific research, the number of young researchers in the following three levels needs to be increased : l) research assistants/ associates, 2) doctoral course students, and 3) young JSPS fellowship grantees. More focus should be placed on the position of persons in the third category. The roles, responsibilities and benefits for persons in all categories need reevaluation and careful consideration.
