With a view to enabling old people to live a worthwhile life, efforts have been made to provide them with attractive places for learning and for social participation. Local boards of education and other organs have organized classes and lecture courses for old people to give them an opportunity for systematic learning. In recent years the number of these classes and lecture courses has been increasing. The Ministry has been granting subsidies to prefecture governments for their expenditures for organizing "old people's colleges" with the cooperation of institutions of higher education. These colleges offer advanced educational programs in a wide range of fields, so as to cope with the diversified and heightened demands of old people. In order to help old people lead a life worth living and to carry out effective measures for this purpose in cooperation with related organizations. The Ministry also subsidizes municipal "comprehensive programs for facilitating the worthwhile living of old people" in which various programs are undertaken, including: the organization of a meeting for promoting education for old people; the creation of classes for old people; the organization of lecture courses for training volunteers; the utilization of the knowledge and experience of old people; The exchange of information and experiences between old and young people; and so forth.
