Chapter 3 Improvement and Enrichment of Elementary and Secondary Education
12 Financial Aid to Private Schools

With a view to helping private schools maintain and improve the level of their educational standards, in addition to subsidies out of the Local Allocation Tax, the Ministry every year provides prefecture governments with national subsidies for grants to private elementary and secondary schools for their current expenditures.

The budget of these national subsidies amounted in 1990 to 77,600 million yen, representing an increase of 2,100 million yet over the previous year.

The Ministry also subsidizes part of the expenditures for repair work for eliminating asbestos from school buildings.

Regarding private special training schools, the Ministry has taken diverse measures for promoting the activities of these schools, including the provision of national subsidies to assist these schools in providing in-service training programs for their teachers. Prefecture governments have also been expanding their financial assistance to these schools year by year.
