Chapter 8. Promotion of Culture
5. Consolidating Cultural Facilities

Cultural facilities form the foundation of cultural activities, and thus their improvement and enrichment is indispensable in promoting culture.

The government has established 4 National Museums of Art for the collection, preservation and exhibition of artistic products, 3 National Museums for the collection, preservation and exhibition of tangible cultural properties, and 2 National Research Institutes of Cultural Properties for the survey and research of cultural properties, respectively in Tokyo and Nara.

The National Theater (special juridical person) has been established as the central entity for the preservation and promotion of traditional performing arts in Japan. The construction plan of a Second National Theater as the center for contemporary performing arts is now in progress. Architectural plan was completed in FY 1989 and the foundation work has already been started. When this theater is completed, it will play an important role as the center of the promotion of Japanese performing arts at a world standard.

Moreover, in recent years, many local governments have built and developed various cultural facilities such as cultural halls. theaters. art museums, museums, and museums of history and folk. These facilities are playing a significant role in the promotion of local arts and culture.
