Research fields with grave scientific significance and strong social demands, such as accelerator science, space science, nuclear fusion research, life sciences including cancer research, earth and environmental science, are given preferential consideration. These researches have been promoted mainly in the inter-university research institutes, special attention being paid to world development in research and the situation of research in Japan. Positive provision of grants-in-aid for scientific research has also been made for the promotion of such researches.
